RSVP wording examples you can copy
Twenty lines for weddings, showers, birthdays and group chats — plus the five wording mistakes that cost hosts their head count.
What good RSVP wording includes
Good RSVP wording does three things: it asks for one clear action, it names a deadline, and it gives one place to reply. If a guest has to decide how to answer, some of them will not answer at all.
Formal wedding wording
Spelled-out dates, no abbreviations, one reply address.
- The favour of a reply is requested by the third of May.
- Kindly reply by May 3 at invitefox.net/e/your-event
- RSVP by May 3 · invitefox.net/e/your-event
- Please respond by the third of May so we may plan your seat and meal.

When you need a real head count
Say what you need counted, so guests answer it the first time.

Regrets only

- Assume we'll see you — let us know only if plans change.
Five wording mistakes to avoid
- Two reply methods on one card, which splits your answers into two lists.
- A deadline with no year on a save-the-date sent months ahead.
- Asking guests to "reply to the host" without naming a person or a link.
- Leaving out plus-one rules, so guests guess and bring extras.
- A link that is easy to mistype instead of a printed QR code.
The fix for most of them is one permanent reply address. A published InviteFox event gives you a link and a printable QR code that keep working even if the venue or time changes after printing. Planning a wedding? See wedding RSVPs online.
Questions people ask
- What does RSVP mean?
- RSVP comes from the French phrase répondez s'il vous plaît, which means please reply. On an invitation it asks each guest to tell the host whether they are coming, usually by a set date.
- How do you word an RSVP on an invitation?
- Give one clear action, one deadline and one place to reply. For example: "Please reply by May 3 at invitefox.net/e/mira-wedding." Avoid two reply methods on the same card — it splits your answers into two lists.
- Should I write RSVP by or reply by?
- Either works. "Kindly reply by" reads warmer and is easier for guests who do not know the abbreviation. Formal wedding stationery still favors RSVP.
- What is the right RSVP deadline?
- Match it to when your vendors need numbers. A wedding caterer usually wants a final count two to four weeks out, so set the deadline a few days before that. For a casual party, a week is plenty.
- How do I chase people who have not replied?
- Send one short reminder a few days before the deadline with the same link. Keep the tone light and repeat the date and the deadline, since most non-replies are forgetfulness rather than a no.
